You probably know Joan Kelley Walker as a powerhouse Canadian writer, reporter, philanthropist, and of course one of stars of ‘The Real Housewives of Toronto’. The woman who does it all (and in style, I might add) has the inside scoop on CAFA and gives us an exclusive look into her own closet.

Joan Kelley Walker leads by example. Juggling a hectic schedule and wearing many hats, Walker is a strong woman, loving wife and mother. Underneath her calm, the cool exterior is an unbridled passion for what matters most – helping others and remaining true to herself.

Joan’s celebrity status has snowballed since she appeared on the inaugural season of The Real Housewives of Toronto this past spring. Her legions of fans spread across the globe like wildfire and followers have reached out to her from as far away as New Zealand, Denmark and Indonesia. “People still want to talk about it (the show),” she said. Joan is happy to hear from fans and tries to respond as often as she can. She found the experience amazing and she appreciates the outpouring of support.

The reality show was invasive but respectful and the crew was very professional. Throughout the show, Joan remained genuine and level-headed. She’s thrilled with the “entirely positive experience” that helped raise the bar for reality TV. She’s happy that she helped contribute to the show’s quality and remained true to herself throughout. This elevated status has opened some very interesting doors and bolstered her philanthropic efforts. While it may sound like a cliche, she follows a simple rule – be a good person and do your best with the purest of intentions. “With privilege comes great responsibility,” she said, quoting Princess Diana. For Joan, her voice gives her a platform to help others. “I feel it’s something I can do,” she said.

Hopefully, by now you have come to know Fernweh Society as a hub for boss lady profiles, advice and inspiration!  I find nothing more inspiring than learning about other women who have taken it upon themselves to rise above and build the life they love.

I had the immense opportunity to sit down and have a heart to heart with Joan Kelley Walker and my mind was BLOWN. The specific occasion was due to the fact that she was the closing keynote speaker at Toronto Start-Up Fashion week; another topic that is dear to my heart and coming soon to the blog!

Many know Joan more recently from The Real Housewives of Toronto, which Joan actually let me in on a secret that it was originally supposed to be The Real Housewives of Muskoka and was later switched to Toronto. She was one of the first selected and got to see the show form from there. From watching bits and pieces of the franchises in other cities I would have been a little nervous to be on the show in the first place. Joan, in fact, shared that sentiment and also confided that she hadn’t really watched the other shows so this wasn’t even a thought to her. In addition to that Joan has many years of experience being in front of and behind the camera so she had a bit of a leg up!

Joan’s background was particularly interesting to me because we are both from Saskatchewan! Joan is originally from Wilcox, SK and moved to Toronto for university.  At that time, she was only just beginning to build her empire. We got to talking about life, perseverance and of course everything on her impressive resume of experience. In that there were a few nuggets of wisdom that stood out for me and seemed completely appropriate for young girlbosses at the beginning of their journeys.

The Neighbourhood Network Fall Food Drive, in support of the King Township Food Bank, was held Oct. 28 at No Frills in Nobleton. A total of $437.25 was raised in cash donations, along with three full carts of groceries (value of at least $300). The rain and cold weather did not deter the generosity of John’s No Frills wonderful customers. King philanthropist and TV personality Joan Kelly Walker pitched in to support the Food Bank, by filling a cart with groceries. Shown with Joan were young volunteers with the Network, No Frills owner John Ciarallo and Teri Hastings.
